If you have a play in development that might be right for Odyssey’s summer stage, you can apply to our Play Creation Program to receive support developing your project.
We offer dramaturgy, workshops with professional actors, digital readings, live staged readings, one-on-one tutorials in special skills related to your project and support for funding programs.
Odyssey’s Artistic Director, Laurie Steven, and veteran multi-faceted theatre artist, Janet Irwin, are co-directors of the program. Both are seasoned dramaturges, playwrights and directors. They have experience in collaborative creation, masked performance, puppetry, physical theatre, international forms of dance-theatre and audio drama to help you develop your play.
Through our play development program, we have brought 29 original plays and new translation-adaptations for the stage or audio drama into full production. Previous participants include David Craig, Lib Spry, Kim Selody, Marty Chan, Emily Pohl-Weary and Jo Walton.
We support plays that are:
- full-length
- inspired by international myth and folktale
- created for masked performance
- suited to an outdoor stage
- written for a cast of 6-8 actors
- aimed at adult and young adult audiences
