Odyssey Theatre — Ottawa’s premier professional open-air theatre — is looking for people who want to get involved in the arts and join the Board of a dynamic, successful, and award-winning theatre company.
For over three decades, Odyssey has attracted thousands each summer to our Theatre Under the Stars along the Rideau River in beautiful Strathcona Park. Odyssey’s award winning productions are renowned for their use of masks, innovative staging, stylized movement and elaborate sets and costumes.
As a non-profit charity, Odyssey’s Board of Directors plays an active leadership role in helping the company achieve its strategic priorities, including: new productions in keeping with its unique artistic vision; building its profile in the community; growing resources for its productions and programs; expanding its performances nationally and internationally; and, developing its outdoor theatre facility in the park.
We are looking for creative and enthusiastic people from diverse backgrounds who have a passion for the arts and who are committed to helping this unique cultural organization continue to grow and succeed.
Volunteers should have a university or college degree or equivalent experience and several years of work experience. Prior experience on a board or committee in a not-for-profit organization would be an asset. You will join a dynamic and diverse team of people who bring a range of experience including finance, marketing, media, arts, law, fundraising, management or other relevant skills.
Board terms are for two years with the possibility of renewal. Members attend approximately ten Board meetings a year and are asked to get involved in a specific project or join a Committee of the Board in an area of interest to them.
If you are passionate about the arts and the role they play in building a vibrant and creative community, we would love to talk to you!
HOW WILL YOU BENEFIT?
You will enhance your interest and knowledge of the performing arts and different forms of theatre. You will have the opportunity to attend performances, rehearsals, workshops of new plays and other events and to interact with professional theatre artists. You will meet new people as part of a committed team working in a positive environment. You will assist local artists in creating new and innovative award-winning theatre that is unique in Canada. Most of all, you will have the satisfaction of making a contribution to the vibrancy and health of the local community and helping a successful and respected arts organization build a national and international profile for its work.
HOW WILL ODYSSEY BENEFIT?
Board members are critical to our success. They represent the community in ensuring the proper governance of Odyssey Theatre as a non-profit, charitable organization. They help the company set broad policies and provide valuable skills and advice to the Artistic Director and General Manager. Board members help build community support and public awareness of our work and raise the funding and resources needed to create and perform our unique form of theatre.
